Meeting Recap

A super chill meeting for May. I’m sure everyone was tired from Tom Creegan’s going away party the night before. We had a new visitor stop by and we played some tunes from the Goodman Manuscripts. Here they are in case you want to work on them yourself for next time:

  • Coffee and Tea - Reel (#393 in Vol. 2)

  • O’Sullivan’s Fancy (#266 in Vol. 2)

  • Black Stripper - Jig (#081 in Vol. 1)

  • An Fhinne-Bhean Mhodhamhuil - March (#299 in Vol. 1)

  • Hornpipe 139 (#139 in Vol. 1… go figure!)

  • Hartney’s Hornpipe; O’Lynnes March - Hornpipe (#127 in Vol. 1)

If you don’t own these two books (you totally should!) you can find them on the ITMA website by simple searching the tune name and “ITMA.” Or by entering the correct tune number to the following address :

https://www.itma.ie/scores/goodman-vol-2-393/

Some of these tunes are also on the Goodman albums performed by Mick O’Brien and co. I shared these two albums in last months newsletter, so I’ll just leave them down below so you can check them out. Although I’m sure you already got them… right?

Walsh Tune Book

A reminder that our infamous Walsh Tune Books are now available for sale on our website. They are a very limited quanitity, and the ability to reprint is unknown, so get yours while you can! Due to the limitations of our website, International order must be done via email rather than through the website. If you live outside the United States, please contact us at hello@irishpipersclub.com with your address so we can calculate shipping.

Here is a direct to the book in our shop: The Cumann Na bPiobairi Collection of Pipe-Friendly Tunes by John Walsh

And speaking of tune books, Elliot Grasso, a former member of the club, will be releasing a new tune book soon. You can check out his youtube channel for updates on when that will be, as well as some great music.

Denis Brooks Tutor

I’ve just been given a small collection of the coveted Denis Brooks Tutor. I will be making these available through our website as soon as possible. Once they are up I will send out another email.

Workshops & Concerts

Cascade Irish Music Week is back!

The much loved week long workshop in Olympia, WA is back after a brief hiatus last year. This year is packed full of excellent instructors again, including the legendary Mickey Dunne for uilleann pipes. You can find out more about the workshop here: Cascadia Irish Music Week

Celtic Arts Foundation: Fall Workshop

Tickets for the CAF fall workshop with Fred Morrison are now on sale, but they’re going fast. This year there will be two days of uilleann piping. You can check out all the details on there website here:

In local news…

Tom Creegan

We celebrated the legendary Tom Creegan this past weekend with a glorious house party full of music, booze, and memories. Tom will be heading back to Ireland in a few days and we wish him well. Hopefully he’ll come back from time to time to regale us with tunes form the motherland. Here’s a few shots from the night.

Bandcamp Finds

As previously mentioned, I’ll reshare these two albums as I think they, and the collection they represent, are well worthy of repeated praise. Remember, Bandcamp Friday is the first Friday of every month, so if you want to support the musicians, save your purchases until then so they can get 100% of the money.

And here is a link to a video discussing the Goodman project and playing some tunes from the collection:
